Album-delivery terms give the label de facto control over how long the deal lasts.
The contract term sets the initial duration of the deal. In recording agreements, the term is often defined by album delivery obligations rather than a fixed calendar period, for example, 'the Initial Period ends upon commercial release of the first Album.' This can stretch far longer than any stated year figure suggests.
A term defined by album delivery rather than years can last indefinitely if the label delays approvals, requests re-records, or simply sits on releases. Combined with option periods, a nominal '1 + 4' deal can realistically span a decade.
