A release commitment is a contractual promise by the label to commercially release your recordings by a specified date. Without one, the label can sit on finished recordings indefinitely, preventing you from releasing them elsewhere while keeping you bound by the exclusivity clause.
Many artists have delivered completed albums that were shelved when the label lost interest, sometimes for years, sometimes permanently. Without a binding release commitment, the exclusivity clause traps you while the label does nothing.
