Rate is negotiable, but deductions applied to the base often reduce effective income significantly.
The recording royalty rate is the percentage of the royalty base the artist receives for each unit sold or stream paid. Headline rates of 18–25% sound substantial, but the effective rate after packaging deductions, royalty base reductions, and 'new media' discounts can be half that.
The headline rate is not the real rate. A 20% royalty on a reduced base ('85% of SRLP less 25% packaging') can yield an effective rate below 12%. Understanding every deduction is as important as the headline number.
