Labels typically control and retain UGC income with no specific accounting to artists.
User-generated content (UGC) refers to content created by fans and others using your music, TikTok videos, YouTube fan edits, Reels, and similar. Platforms use content ID systems (like YouTube's Content ID) to identify and monetise this content. Labels typically register recordings with these systems and collect the resulting income.
UGC generates real revenue that flows to whoever registered the recording with the platform's content ID system. Labels routinely collect this income and account for it (if at all) as a standard royalty, applying recoupment deductions. Artists who encourage fan content deserve to understand and share in that income.
